Nearly two hours after Tristan insisted Wes ride, Cole picked up Amy’s scent again. They moved off the trail, and Tristan shifted back to human form. Wes held his hand as they walked, and Tristan wondered if he missed the fuller body contact as much as Tristan did.

After a long trek through a huge and excessively thorny blackberry patch, Cole froze.

Wes held up his hand signaling the rest of them to wait. With his snout, Cole pointed across the stream that had been following the trail. Then, he gave Wes a pointed look. There was someone there. Tristan couldn’t see anyone, but Cole wouldn’t be that wary about anything else.

“Stay behind me,” Wes said to Tristan and Brandon, keeping his voice low.

Tristan squeezed Wes’s hand, then let go. He thought about when he’d gone to Ledford City with Wes to help him track the closeted werewolf who’d framed Levi for murder. Tristan hadn’t taken the danger seriously. He’d been living recklessly for years, ever since Brandon rejected him. In his mind, nothing was worth taking seriously, not even his own safety, but now that it seemed like he had a chance with Wes, he wished he’d paid more attention to the shooting lessons his Dad had tried to give him.

Cole growled, low and menacingly. A shiver ran through Tristan, and he fought his instinct to run. Something moved in the trees across the stream.

Wes drew his gun and aimed, ready to protect them if need be.

Tristan saw the glint of sun reflecting off a gun barrel. Then the person across the stream fired.

Cole sprang, snarling.

The man ran, and Cole took off after him.

Wes started to follow Cole, but Tristan pulled him back. “You can’t catch a wolf. And he wouldn’t let you stop him if you did.”

They heard another shot, and all three of them tensed. Tristan realized he’d grabbed Wes’s hand and Brandon had grabbed his. That was fucked up. He looked at Brandon, and Brandon pulled his hand away. “Sorry. Herd mentality.”

Tristan nodded. Brandon was part of the herd. No matter how fucked up their relationship, Tristan would protect him just like any of the other horses.

Just when Tristan thought he wasn’t going to be able to hold Wes back anymore, Cole came loping back, stumbling a bit, blood coating his side.

“Cole!” Wes ran to him, knelt, and pulled Cole into his arms, showing no concern that he might react like an injured wolf rather than a man willing to accept help from a friend.

Jealously churned in Tristan as he watched Wes with Cole. He hated himself for it, but he couldn’t stop those hurtful feelings.

Cole would shift and be fine. Wes had to know that, but he was fawning over him, and Tristan fucking hated it.

He sighed and forced himself to deal with the situation. Brandon was useless, practically hyperventilating and wildly waving his gun toward the woods, and Wes was too busy petting Cole to be firm.

Tristan knelt by Cole. “Shift. Now.”

Cole snarled at him.

“You know that’s the best way to heal this, and you need to tell us what happened.
